The Specimen Book Workshop at the Philadelphia Center for the Book

10:00 am to 4:00 pm
Historically, 'Specimen Books' were used to display various typeface examples. Taking the ideas of display and informational storage, we will construct a new form of specimen book. Using an accordion-folded spine, we will build pages with pockets and boxes to store and display items. Pages with room to write about each "specimen" will also be included. We will use Scratch-A-Prints to create simple background patterns for our pages, and spend some time writing brief stories about our displayed items. Bring a few things that you'd like to display!

Erin was just recently accepted to the NH State Council on the Arts' Artist Roster. She'll be available to do workshops and residencies of all kinds. A solid week of Book Arts delights! Each day we will focus on a new structure, delving into content as well as form. Simple writing exercises will be explored as well as simple print techniques for visual content. Structures to be covered may include Simple Sewn Structures, Spider Books, the Coptic stitch, Record Books, Folded Structures of all kinds, the Chinese Sewing Box Book and Hinged Box Books.
August 23-27, Monday to Friday, 10-4 each day. $425, includes all materials.
